Michael Faraday, Inventor of the Electric Motor

Michael Faraday (born Sept. 22, 1791) was a British physicist and chemist who is best known for his discoveries of electromagnetic induction and of the laws of electrolysis. His biggest breakthrough in electricity was his invention of the electric motor. Early Life Born in 1791 to a poor family in the Newington, Surrey village of South  London, Faraday had a difficult childhood riddled with poverty. Faradays mother stayed at home to take care of Michael and his three siblings, and his father was a blacksmith who was often too ill to work steadily, which meant that the children frequently went without food. Despite this, Faraday grew up a curious child, questioning everything and always feeling an urgent need to know more. He learned to read at Sunday school for the Christian sect the family belonged to called the Sandemanians, which greatly influenced the way he approached and interpreted nature. At the age of 13, he became an errand boy for a bookbinding shop in London, where he would read every book that he bound and decided that one day he would write his own. At this bookbinding shop, Faraday became interested in the concept of energy, specifically force, through an article he read in the third edition of Encyclopà ¦dia Britannica. Because of his early reading and experiments with the idea of force, he was able to make important discoveries in electricity later in life and eventually became a chemist and physicist. However, it wasnt until Faraday attended chemical lectures by Sir Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London that he was able to finally pursue his studies in chemistry and science. After attending the lectures, Faraday bound the notes he had taken and sent them to Davy to apply for an apprenticeship under him, and a few months later, he began as Davys lab assistant. Apprenticeships and Early Studies in Electricity Davy was one of the leading chemists of the day when Faraday joined him in 1812, having discovered sodium and potassium and studying the decomposition of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid that yielded the discovery of chlorine. Following the atomic theory of Ruggero Giuseppe Boscovich, Davy and Faraday began to interpret the molecular structure of such chemicals, which would greatly influence Faradays ideas about electricity. When Faradays second apprenticeship under Davy ended in late 1820, Faraday knew  about as much chemistry as anyone else at the time, and he used this newfound knowledge to continue experiments in the fields of electricity and chemistry. In 1821, he married Sarah Barnard and took up permanent residence at the Royal Institution, where he would conduct research on electricity and magnetism. Faraday built two devices to produce what he called electromagnetic rotation, a continuous circular motion from the circular magnetic force around a wire. Unlike his contemporaries at the time, Faraday interpreted electricity as more of a vibration than the flow of water through pipes and began to experiment based off of this concept. One of his first experiments after discovering electromagnetic rotation was attempting to pass a ray of polarized light through an electrochemically decomposing solution to detect the intermolecular strains the current would produce. However, throughout the 1820s, repeated experiments yielded no results. It would be another 10 years before Faraday made a huge breakthrough in chemistry. Discovering Electromagnetic Induction In the next decade, Faraday  began his great series of experiments in which he discovered electromagnetic induction. These experiments would form the basis of the modern electromagnetic technology thats still used today. In 1831, using his induction ring—the first electronic transformer—Faraday made one of his greatest discoveries: electromagnetic induction, the induction or generation of electricity in a wire by means of the electromagnetic effect of a current in another wire. In the second series of experiments in September 1831 he discovered magneto-electric induction: the production of a steady electric current. To do this, Faraday attached two wires through a sliding contact to a copper disc. By rotating the disc between the poles of a horseshoe magnet, he obtained a continuous direct current, creating the first generator. From his experiments came devices that led to the modern electric motor, generator, and transformer. Continued Experiments, Death, and Legacy Faraday continued his  electrical  experiments throughout much of his later life. In 1832, he proved that the electricity induced from a magnet, voltaic electricity produced by a battery, and static electricity were all the same. He also did significant work in electrochemistry, stating the First and Second Laws of Electrolysis, which laid the foundation for that field and another modern industry. Faraday passed away in his home in Hampton Court on August 25, 1867, at the age of 75. He was buried  at Highgate Cemetery in North London.  A memorial plaque was set up in his honor at Westminster Abbey Church, near Isaac Newtons burial spot.   Faradays influence extended to a great many leading scientists. Albert Einstein was known to have had a portrait of Faraday on his wall in his study, where it hung  alongside pictures of legendary physicists Sir Isaac Newton  and  James Clerk Maxwell. Among those who praised his achievements were Earnest Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics. Of Faraday he once stated, When we consider the magnitude and extent of his discoveries and their influence on the progress of science and of industry, there is no honour too great to pay to the memory of Faraday, one of the greatest scientific discoverers of all time.

Segmentation and Target Market: Elio Motors Paul Elio is the engineer and Chief Executive Officer of an American startup automaker, Elio Motors, which was founded in 2008. Production was scheduled to begin in early 2015 in Shreveport, Louisiana, however it has been delayed. The design of the vehicle has three wheels with all the standard options of a four-wheeled vehicle. The selling points of this vehicle is that ninety percent of the parts used to produce the vehicle are American made, it can get around 84 miles per gallon, and a projected manufacture suggested retail price of only $6,800. Market Segmentation The decision of dividing the entire market into different consumer segments is just what Paul Elio did when he saw a potential for his three-wheeled efficiency vehicle. Before a business can target a specific market, the market needs to be divided into segments based upon similar needs, wants, or desires. â€Å"It is not feasible to go after all customers, because customers have different wants, needs and tastes† (Suttle). Identification of target demographics is necessary for market segmentation research. Consumer demographics range from gender, age, ethnic and religious groups, household size and income, and even geographic regions. Markets can also be segmented based on consumer’s behavioral and psychographic characteristics. My Childhood Memories Of Childhood Friendships Essay Example For Students

My Childhood Memories Of Childhood Friendships Essay Childhood friendships usually end up following one of two paths. Either the friendship is an enduring one that stands the test of time or the two playmates simply grow apart over the course of adolescence. For me, two of my closest childhood friendships followed a different path. The days of cutting through my neighbor’s yard and rushing to either Lizzy or Serina’s house so we could talk about the new Justin Bieber single ended so abruptly, it took me months to realize what had actually happened. At the tender age of fourteen, I was unceremoniously ejected from my only friend group. One rainy September day, I remember sitting in my best friend Lizzy’s attic. It wasn’t a finished attic or an attic a full-grown person could completely stand up in for that matter, but we had spent the past few days covering up the gray, fiberglass insulation with bright pink sheets and blankets, pinning our own artwork to the makeshift walls, filling the small space with more blankets and pillows to sit on, and we even managed to get a small T.V. up the rickety foldaway ladder. Our cramped hideaway was just perfect for Lizzy, Serina, Lizzy’s sister, Ginny, and me. We even came up with a club name for our modest clubhouse. L.O.G.S. (taken from the first letter of each of our names) was one of my favorite places, for the month or so that it lasted. We even joked about how I, having the only name that started with a vowel, was the most imperative member. On a particularly boring day in our humble retreat, I fell down the rickety foldaway ladder. Despite landing on the concrete garage floor from a nearly eight-foot drop, the only thing that was actually hurt my middle and ring fingers on my left hand. I had gotten a friction burn . .st friends.Friendships, especially broken ones are difficult things to write about. Up until now, I suppose if I kept everything tucked away in my mind, then only the good times we had together would be real. I was not originally going to write about this topic, but on Valentine’s Day, I came across Serina’s blog for her personal thoughts. I read through every post she wrote (I think she started writing them in 2015, but she wrote about many different time periods in her life) and noticed that I was not in them at all and, that really hurt me, even though our friendship ended years ago. Did all those weekends, holidays, and Black Friday Shopping excursions we spent together leave a lesser impact on her than they did on me? Whatever the case, I still genuinely care about Lizzy and Serina and wish we could all sit down together and work out everything that went wrong.

The Dialectical Cut In Socrates Soul Essays - Dialogues Of Plato

The Dialectical Cut in Socrates' Soul Within the spectrum of the political realm, one of the most important philosophical questions arises, "What is the best regime?" It is obvious that the best regime is one of complied consent. There still seems to be difficulty in deciding the best means to the desired end. Politics, the ruling force, operates in the realm of opinions. Its counterpart, philosophy, is an attempt to replace opinions about political things. This "political science" is the process of acquiring political knowledge for the guiding of political life. The transformation from opinions to knowledge is through the dialectic method. This "political science" is not without its problems. It is plagued by relativism and nihilism. These problems tend to make politics unreceptive to philosophy. What philosophy is is best seen in a confrontation between the philosopher and the city. It is by no small coincidence that these two conflicting views are seen in different characters in The Being of the Beautiful. The obvious question now becomes "Why does Plato make a dialectical cut in Socrates' soul between Theaetetus and Young Socrates?" In answering this question it becomes central to assume that the being of the beautiful is not contained in one character, and for that matter, may not be a character at all. It is crucial then to take up the characteristics of both Theaetetus and Young Socrates in relation to what the beautiful is. In so doing, it will provide the basis for political knowledge. To begin, Theaetetus is a youth just returned from battle. War, being the harshest of all teachers places one under the duress of necessity. This is a foreshadowing of the struggle, both internal and external that are about to occur. The exteral battle is the undermining of the beliefs and opinions of the many. This undermining is very dangerous for it leads to one of three options: death, madness or philosophy. As different as all of the beliefs are, the basis is faith butressed by reason to make it friendly to philosophy. The internal struggle, at first glance, seems to be the easier to construct. The internal struggle is Theaetetus' gripping the concept of the idea (eikoi). Socrates acknowledges that Theaetetus grasps the idea by saying "Gosh, that's good by Hera, and divine" (Theaetetus, 154d). Socrates apparently implicates that Theaetetus has the mind of a philosopher. He is one of the few who can have his opinions undercut and still be willing to learn. Although Theaetetus adds substantive meaning to the discussion, he soon becomes "dizzy" (Theaetetus, 155d). Again, Socrates encourages Theaetetus saying that "this experience is very much that of the philosophers" (Theaetetus, 155d). Throughout the Theaetetus, Theaetetus cannot seem to move out of the language of the city. He constantly answers "it seems likely" and "it appears". Socrates does not correct this apparent flaw. Socrates is very patient with Theaetetus, stopping at many points to let Theaetetus grasp the point. It is not until the Sophist that Theaetetus moves from the language of "it appears" to "of course" (Sophist, 222e) cutting off the Stranger in the middle of a sentence. The Stranger treats Theaetetus very differently than does Socrates. Perhaps this is the reason for Socrates' qualified recommendation of Theaetetus to the Stranger. "Well, its possible to select anyone you want of those present, for everyone will gently comply with you, but if you take me as your adviser, you will choose one of the young, Theaetetus here, or anyone of the rest who suits you" (Sophist, 217d). The Stranger does believe that Theaetetus can become the philosopher. "Since I understand your nature, and it will advance by itself, I will let it go... for time would be superfluous" (Sophist, 265e). The stranger teaches skepticism that one must have to become the philsopher but at the same time teaching Theaetetus not to give up altogether. In contrast to Theaetetus' moderation, Young Socrates is excess of courage. Where Theaetetus is timid, Young Socrates is courageous. Young Socrates first fault is that he has trouble following the dialogue. It is important to make Young Socrates sympathetic to philosophy, by discouraging him, but not making him the philosopher. Although Young Socrates gets lost in the speech, he continues to follow in an attempt to understand. He even goes to the extreme of reproaching the Stranger when he says "... but we went around in a circle distinguishing very many things in vain" (Statesman, 283b) by saying "Just speak" (Statesman 283c). He does not get angry like Callicles and is more perseverant than Polus. Spirited citizens, such as
